Building on the success of our previous ZOOM online courses during the Covid-19 restrictions and responding to popular demand, we are excited to offer a fully online summer course again.
This course combines lectures and seminars with interactive breakout sessions for viva practice. The program features exam-focused lectures, intensive viva preparation, and specialty viva sessions, along with several simulated clinical scenarios. The viva sessions are conducted and assessed in a format that mirrors the actual examination, with feedback provided to identify areas for improvement and enhance performance.
Our core faculty comprises highly experienced educators and examiners, including past examiners and founding members of the course. They bring extensive expertise in viva examinations at this level. We ensure a high faculty-to-delegate ratio to maintain personalised learning and engagement.
Our Alpine FRCS General Surgery Section 2 course has been successfully running for over 20 years, earning a reputation for excellence in surgical education.

Welcome to the Alpine FRCS VIVA Course, which is set in an exclusive away from it all location in Les Arcs, France where we hope you will find the right balance between intensive revision, plentiful viva practice and the joys of fresh mountain air.
Each day of the Alpine course commences with a buffet breakfast, followed by four hours of subspecialty seminars. This is followed by a three/four-hour break (will vary), and is the only spare time before around 11 pm. Previous delegates have placed a high value on the opportunities for distraction-free private study during the afternoon break, and others have decided to “clear the head” with a few hours outdoors. Thereafter follows a daily viva practice session until dinner, and after dinner, there are subspecialty evening tutorials. Over the six days, the group will face over 170 vivas, and receive around 36 hours of intensive exam-specific tuition. The clinical exams are simulated with clinical photographs and a wide span of radiological images. There is also the unquestionable and unique benefit of a ‘captive faculty’, providing an opportunity for individual informal consultation.
Each and every viva is conducted and marked as it would be in the examination, and there is the provision of individually tailored feedback and an opportunity to attend ‘viva surgery’ to help you ascertain areas of weakness and improve.
The core faculty members have a vast experience in teaching and examining at this level. Some are past examiners and others are founder members of the course with considerable experience in viva examination at the level seen in the examinations. The faculty numbers are calculated and maintain a high faculty: delegate ratio. This course has been successfully running for the past 18 years.
NOTE: Please let us know if you need help with travel arrangements. We have a limited number of group package deals that include flights, transfers and 7 nights half board accommodation in the course hotel (L'Aiguille Rouge, Les Arcs 2000). Please discuss this with the course administrator (admin@surgicalcourses.com) if you are interested.
